FM Goes to Red Rocks | Part III

Posted in Fucking Monolith by fkngmtns on September 6, 2008

Welcome to Fucking Monolith. Stay tuned week-by-week as we countdown to the “biggest festival” (their words, not ours) ever to come to Red Rocks Amphitheatre. We’ll be picking through the Monolith line-up and posting reviews and interviews from select festival-bound acts. It won’t always be pretty–but it’ll always be honest.

Silversun Pickups

Silversun Pickups’ first full-length Carnavas has drawn seemingly endless comparisons to early Smashing Pumpkins, but not as a result of unoriginality. The overall sensation of optimistic melancholy that pervades the disc invites the lofty comparison and the opening track “Melatoninmanages to call to memory, if not quite mimics, another like-minded act My Bloody Valentine. But immediately following the first song is the heavily distorted, aggressive “Well Thought Out Twinkles” which sets the mood for the rest of the disc. From start to finish, frontman Brian Aubert’s ghostly, effeminate vocals are set against a contrast of macho distortion that flirtatiously leans toward dissonance. A shoegazer’s wet dream, Carnavas is not unlike that last really good beach party of the summer. [Ryan Nobles]

Silversun Pickups plays 8:45 p.m. Saturday, 9/13, Main Stage at Red Rocks.
